Marblehead High School and Deerpath Energy Launch Wind Turbine Project.

Turbine donated by Deerpath provides MHS basis for new curriculum in alternative energy and problem solving.
MARBLEHEAD, MA, April 7, 2010- Green energy has come to Marblehead High School (MHS). Today, MHS and Deerpath Energy, Inc. (Deerpath), a local, renewable-energy project development company, launched a collaborative wind turbine project at MHS. Deerpath, the pioneer of a new renewable energy solution called “Scalable Small Wind”, has donated a wind turbine to MHS for use in school projects and as a test site for the company.
“The wind turbine project provides a unique educational opportunity for our students to develop complex problem solving skills and gain experience in alternative energy,” according to Paul DuLac, Superintendent of MHS. The MHS faculty is developing alternative energy curricula based on the Deerpath donated turbine.
“The turbine allows us to teach beyond theory,” stated Kristina Kyles, Acting Co-Principal of MHS. “Our students are learning and witnessing the benefits and challenges of harnessing wind energy as well as gaining experience in how to think through the implications of applying any cutting edge technology solution.”
Incorporating the Skystream 3.7 turbine manufactured by Southwest Wind Power and considered the most advanced small wind turbine on the market, Deerpath mounted the turbine on top of a light pole in the School’s parking lot. Deerpath’s solution produces green power that flows through the grid and MHS’s existing power management infrastructure for the school’s use. A state of-the-art communications subsystem provides power production and operational information to be relayed to MHS and Deerpath staff wirelessly on an ongoing basis.
Scalable Small Wind is a solution that allows schools, cities, towns, commercial companies and government agencies to utilize a clean energy source in urban and suburban areas where large wind solutions are not feasible. Deerpath’s vision is to deploy multiple small wind systems at a single location resulting in a significant reduction in their customer’s fossil fuel use.
“Since we are a Marblehead-based company, we wanted to test the turbine locally while contributing to our community and local school system,” said Kelly Warner, founder and CEO of Deerpath. “This little turbine, when scaled, can make a huge impact. We appreciate the support and assistance from the Town, our partners and subcontractors to make the project and testing possible.”
